Background
Post-graduate courses/workshops have been held on several occasions just prior to NuGOweek offering PhD students and postdoctoral researchers an opportunity to attend a training course and a scientific meeting with no additional costs.
In 2018 a post-graduate course will be held in Newcastle University, UK on:
– Saturday 1st September (kick-off, lectures, and informal get together)
– Sunday 2nd September (lectures, group work, and demonstration )
– Monday 3rd September (rounding up group work and group presentations, conclusions)
On Monday afternoon 3rd September,  registration for NuGOweek 2018 will start at 16.00 hrs.

Target group
PhD students and postdoctoral researchers interested in whole body metabolism and translatability from mouse to human.

Course aims
The objective of the course is to provide information about topics such as:
– How does ambient temperature affect metabolism (human and mouse) and the outcome of nutritional studies?
– Measurements of energy metabolism.
– Use of indirect calorimetry for nutritional studies.
– Human and animal translational aspects

In addition, the course provides an excellent opportunity for networking with other PhD students and early career researchers and for developing skills in undertaking collaborative research.

Program topics and draft programme
Participants will have to study 4-5 articles prior to the course. In lectures a variety of topics will be discussed. The student assignment will focus on translational aspects and 4-5 groups will be charged with the task to design a nutritional study affecting energy metabolism optimized for translation to human.

Date & duration
The course will be held on Saturday 1st (start 17.00 hrs), Sunday 2nd (09.00 – 15.00 hrs), Monday 3rd September (9.00 – 13.00 hrs). NuGO-week 2018 opens at 17.30 hrs on September 3rd.

Study load
The study load of this course is 2 ECTS and includes 15 h of preparatory work prior to the course.

Location & accommodation
Lectures and group work will be at The Core, a well-equipped center of the University of Newcastle. Participants have to book their accommodation according instructions given for the participants of NuGOweek 2018.  Please note that inexpensive accommodation is available at Sleeperz Hotel (https://sleeperz.com/newcastle ). This hotel is about 10 minutes’ walk from The Core.

Registration & course fee
The course is free of charge for PhD-students and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with NuGO member organisations who register for NuGOweek and pay the appropriate conference fee. For others the course fee is € 175.  The get together on Saturday and lunch on Sunday – Monday are included.
